A shady refuge on Crooked Lake, this single-story ranch is a lovely couple's retreat. An artesian well gurgles peacefully and flows to a pond before emptying into the lake. The conservation-minded owners of this home have left native flora in place along the shoreline, giving their setting a true "Up North" cottage feeling. Enjoy a view of the lake from the living and dining rooms, or dine at the picnic table while watching woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, grosbeaks, orioles -- and yes, squirrels -- eat from the birdfeeders maintained by these nature-loving homeowners. Look carefully and you may see bald eagles, osprey, hawks, heron, and several species of water birds as well.
| You don't have to be a boater to love this spot on Crooked Lake, with its nearly pristine vista of the Oden Island Nature Preserve and its collection of entertaining waterfowl. If you do boat, however, watercraft under 20' do well on Crooked Lake and may be launched half a mile from the house. Tie your own boat up at the dock or rent a boat or kayaks from Ryde Marina across the lake. This is a great kayak/canoe lake, with lots of little nooks and crannies to explore. In a power boat, you can travel from Crooked Lake through a channel to Pickerel Lake, and down the Crooked River to Burt Lake and the Inland Waterway. This waterway is an historic trade route to Lake Huron via Cheboygan. There are two locks on this route; one at Cheboygan and one at the mouth of the Crooked River. Both charge small fees. | ![]() |

Mature pine, maple, ash, and hemlock trees keep this home refreshingly cool. A typical Irish flower garden welcomes visitors. Below, the view from the living room looks out over the lake and the artesian well-fed pond. Our guests rave about drinking the cold, refreshing water.

The living room blends a native limestone fireplace wall and wormy cypress panelling for a rustic "up north" feeling. Cathedral ceilings lend the living room a lodge look, enhanced by folk art, antiques, and "shed" antlers found by the owners on their travels. The work of northern Michigan artists hangs throughout the home. A stained glass lamp created locally by Shadetree Studios is the centerpiece of the living room; it depicts a trout stream swimming with brookies, browns, and rainbows. A primitive willow rocker made by the homeowner makes a cozy place to curl up with a book. |

Two baths and a laundry room round out the living amenities in this simple, unpretentious home. A compact kitchen/dining area is equipped with electric appliances, dishwasher, coffeemaker, and microwave. Dishes, pots and pans, paper products, sheets and towels, are provided. You'll love starting your day at the table, watching ducks paddle by as the sun plays on Oden Island's nature preserve on the opposite shore. The preserve offers a short but beautiful hike and lots of sandy places to wade. Ask the homeowners to leave bikes (bring your own helmets) for you to ride to the trailhead, or to the sandy swimming beach. Each is about one mile from the house. If you're an adventurous biker, there is great hilly terrain all around northwestern lower Michigan. |
